The challenge: turning international interest into a working capability

The client had an established domestic brand and agency-developed visual identity, but international growth required a working commercial system—not only an English website or campaign. A broad premium range raised practical buyer questions about selection, technical proof, use, care, price, shipping and support.

Commerce, content, payment, fulfilment, PR, crowdfunding, creators, measurement and client ownership had to function together. The challenge was to connect evidence, specialist work and approvals into an international direct-to-consumer capability the client could ultimately operate.

International Market-Entry System

From specialist product knowledge to an international operating capability

The work connected five interdependent components rather than treating the store, campaigns and specialist providers as separate activities.

01 Category and market understanding

Knife types, use cases, customer segments, competing brands and purchase friction.

02 International proposition

Product proof, selection guidance, offers, pricing and content for overseas buyers.

03 Commerce and operations

Shopify, payment, shipping, fulfilment, customer communication and service.

04 Validation and activation

Earned media, crowdfunding, PR, creators, events, social content and paid media.

05 Learning and client ownership

Measurement, operational improvement, knowledge-building and structured handover.

Attention became useful only when the customer journey and operating system could absorb it; live evidence then informed the next decision.

The strategic response: sequence the work as one market-entry program

Following discovery in Seki and detailed product study, Mark Fukuhara co-developed a staged roadmap informed by customer, market and competitor research. The program moved from category fluency and proposition design to cross-border commerce, bounded demand tests, live optimization and handover. Each phase was designed to produce evidence for the next decision while preserving the client’s authority over product and commercial risk.

Multi-Year Implementation

How the program developed from discovery to handover

The engagement moved through connected phases as the client’s international capability, evidence and operating needs developed.

2016

Discovery in Seki

A manufacturing-region visit, product discovery and initial overseas-market research established the practical context.

2017

Staged international roadmap

Market-entry priorities, demand testing, operating requirements and the role of crowdfunding were organized into a sequenced plan.

2018

Commerce foundation and live demand signal

The Shopify foundation, international content and cross-border workflow supported more than 100 orders in the four weeks following the Food & Wine feature.

2019

Campaign and U.S. activation

Crowdfunding, creator and media outreach, paid-media coordination and a Manhattan product event broadened international activation.

2020–2022

Improvement and structured handover

Store, content, social, customer and performance work continued before key commerce and social administration transitioned to the client.

2026

Continuing sales activity

The international store remained operational and continued receiving orders years after the principal engagement ended.

Outcomes: commercial proof and post-handover continuity

The engagement produced both bounded commercial proof and a functioning operation: more than 100 post-feature orders, a funded crowdfunding test, 63% of international-store sales attributed to first-time customers in a documented six-month analysis, and store activity evidenced years after the 2022 handover. Exact periods and evidence sources appear below.

Commercial Evidence Scorecard

Commercial signals across launch, activation and continued operation

The strongest retained results show both international market response and a direct-to-consumer capability that remained in use after handover.

Food & Wine response 100+ orders in the four weeks following the feature

A concentrated international sales response

Those four weeks accounted for nearly 85% of the payout value in the retained 2018–2019 Shopify records.

Evidence: Retained Shopify records and contemporaneous analysis.

Customer acquisition 63% of international-store sales in a defined six-month analysis

A majority from first-time customers

Sales attributable to first-time customers made up a majority of international-store sales during the documented period.

Evidence: Documented six-month Shopify analysis.

Durability July 2026 latest retained sales-related payout evidence

Store activity continued after handover

The international store continued receiving orders years after key social and commerce administration transitioned to the client in 2022.

Evidence: Store status and retained sales-related payout notices.

Demand validation 107% of the international crowdfunding target

International campaign funded

The campaign finished above the funding threshold selected for the international market test and created a transactional proof point.

Evidence: Campaign-platform result.

Documented client report

One publisher and creator activation generated 500+ same-day website visits and 200+ new Instagram followers, according to the client’s contemporaneous report.

Evidence base

Retained Shopify and campaign records, contemporaneous analyses, payout notices and documented client reporting.

Interpretation

The figures reflect defined periods and demonstrate commercial response, customer acquisition and operational durability; they are not presented as audited ROI.

What the results show

The evidence supports two conclusions: international customers bought, and the resulting capability remained in use after handover. The value was therefore both transactional and organizational.

Client perspective

Over more than five years, Mark helped us turn our international-sales objectives into a practical operation. He developed a strong understanding of our kitchen knives, manufacturing and overseas customers, and took a leading role from strategy through implementation. He coordinated the e-commerce, crowdfunding, PR, content, advertising and logistics specialists involved while keeping our team closely involved in the important decisions. He did not stop at making recommendations: he helped build and improve the store, learn from actual customer response and transfer the main systems and knowledge to our team. Through the engagement, we learned a great deal about overseas sales, and the international store continues to operate and receive orders. Mark was a dependable partner throughout, and we trusted him to connect the people and practical issues needed to move the work forward.

Building knife-category fluency before making market claims

Working with client specialists, Mark studied production, steels and hardness, straight and serrated edges, handle construction, balance, maintenance, testing and intended use. This made it possible to distinguish supportable claims from generic craftsmanship language, brief specialists accurately and organize content around real buyer decisions. Client experts retained authority over manufacturing and technical accuracy, while remarkable. translated that expertise into international positioning and customer guidance.

Knife-Buyer Decision Model

Turning knife expertise into customer confidence

International content and commerce had to answer the practical questions behind a premium knife purchase—not rely on provenance or craft language alone.

01

Use and selection

Santoku, chef’s, utility, slicing, bread, pastry and other specialist knives matched to foods, cutting motions, experience levels and kitchen needs.

02

Technical proof

Steel, hardness, construction, edge characteristics, testing, provenance and clear boundaries around what the evidence could responsibly support.

03

Handling and care

Balance, handle comfort, handedness, safe use, cleaning, home maintenance, straight versus serrated edges and professional sharpening.

04

Purchase context

Individual knives or sets; home or professional use; availability, engraving, gifting, presentation and the expectations of long-term ownership.

05

Commercial confidence

Total price, international shipping, delivery timing, duties, reviews, returns, responsive support and confidence that the product would suit the buyer’s actual use.

From roadmap to implementation

1. Establishing the commerce and cross-border operating foundation

Mark recommended Shopify, defined requirements, screened and selected an independent developer, directed the build and administered the live store. The operating design connected product presentation with payment, shipping, duties, returns, customer support, care guidance, fulfilment, tracking, troubleshooting and handover. The client retained final authority over specifications, technical and safety claims, pricing, manufacturing, inventory and physical fulfilment.

2. Translating kitchen-knife knowledge into an international customer journey

remarkable. wrote or substantially edited the English store and campaign content. It helped buyers compare knife types, evaluate technical proof and provenance, understand care, and decide among individual products, sets, engraving, gifts and delivery options. The journey extended across editorial and campaign entry points, product pages, email, social content, customer inquiries, service issues and performance review.

3. Turning editorial attention into operating learning

In November 2018, the client’s serrated bread and pastry knife was featured in Food & Wine through the client’s New York PR network. More than 100 orders followed in four weeks. Mark and the engagement team examined traffic and device data, the mobile journey, checkout abandonment and recovery, reviews, lead capture, retargeting and tracking. Editorial attention became evidence for operating improvement, not only visibility.

4. Validating demand and broadening market activation

Crowdfunding was jointly selected as a bounded demand test and reached 107% of target. Mark and the team recruited and coordinated a specialist contributor and connected reward design, content, creator outreach, paid media, customer reconciliation and reporting. With a New York PR specialist, the team also supported an invitation-only demonstration at a cooking-school venue inside Macy’s and a later publisher and creator activation that the client reported generated 500-plus same-day visits and more than 200 new followers. Each activation used the same proposition, product education, customer journey and commercial infrastructure.

Stakeholder and project leadership

remarkable. coordinated client leadership; product, manufacturing, inventory and fulfilment teams; an independent developer and platform providers; and crowdfunding, paid-media, PR, event, publisher and creator specialists. Their work combined hands-on category, content, commerce and analysis with sequencing, briefing, review, communication, escalation and handover. Technical, safety, pricing, manufacturing and ownership decisions remained with the client.

Stakeholder Architecture

Coordinating specialist expertise without blurring accountability

Each contributor had a distinct role. The project-lead responsibility was to connect their work, dependencies and decisions into one market-entry program.

01

Client ownership and senior leadership

International objectives, budgets, principal commercial decisions and final approvals.

02

Product and manufacturing specialists

Knife use, materials, heat treatment, grinding, edges, handles, sharpening, technical accuracy and production capability.

03

Inventory, packaging and fulfilment teams

Availability, lead times, packaging, dispatch, delivery issues and practical service constraints.

04

Commerce and platform specialists

Independent development, Shopify support, payment, shipping tools, couriers and technical troubleshooting.

05

Crowdfunding and paid-media specialists

Channel-specific launch design, campaign execution, media delivery, reconciliation and reporting.

06

PR, event, publisher and creator network

U.S. market context, media and creator relationships, invitations, demonstrations, reviews, content and audience activation.

Program integration

Mark Fukuhara, founder of remarkable.

Co-led the engagement as principal day-to-day international market-entry and implementation lead; co-developed the roadmap and international proposition; built knife-category knowledge; screened and briefed specialists; integrated dependencies and approvals; led client communication; interpreted performance; and supported handover.

Client decision rights: the client retained final authority over product facts, technical and safety claims, manufacturing, inventory, pricing, budgets and principal approvals.

Delivery and attribution

The engagement was delivered through a partner venture co-owned by remarkable. Mark co-led it and served as principal day-to-day international market-entry and implementation lead; specialist contributors remained responsible for their domains.

What made the work durable—and what this case demonstrates

Durability came from connecting product evidence, specialist execution, live learning and client ownership—not treating strategy as a standalone deliverable.

01

Strategy and execution were connected

Category and market research was translated into platform, offer, content, partner, campaign and operating decisions. The roadmap did not end as a presentation.

02

Product evidence came before international claims

Manufacturing expertise, specifications, testing, use and care were examined before technical facts were converted into customer-facing proof and guidance.

03

Specialist expertise was integrated

Developers, PR and event advisers, crowdfunding and paid-media specialists, creators, platform providers and logistics partners worked within shared dependencies and approval boundaries.

04

Client authority and ownership remained explicit

The client retained final product and commercial decisions, while key administrative knowledge and control were transitioned through a structured handover.

remarkable. can lead the space between strategy and execution: build technical category fluency, convert specialist knowledge into an international proposition, coordinate client and external teams, use market response to improve operations, and transfer a working system to the client. Comparable work may begin with a diagnostic, a bounded demand-validation pilot or integrated implementation.

Starting Point

How a comparable engagement can begin

A manufacturer does not need to commit to a full international launch at the outset. A bounded first engagement can clarify the opportunity, expose operating constraints and create evidence for the next decision.

01

Clarity before investment

Market-entry and operating diagnostic

For leadership teams with strong products and international ambition but uncertainty about the best customer, offer, route to market or operating model.

May include

Category, customer and competitor evidence; product and claim readiness; offer architecture; channel and platform options; logistics; stakeholder map; and evidence gaps.

Decision point

Proceed to a bounded test, refine the proposition and operating assumptions, or pause before larger investment.

02

Defined market test

Bounded demand-validation pilot

A controlled test connecting a selected product or set, customer segment, commercial channel, activation plan and measurable decision criteria.

May include

Focused positioning and content; a practical commerce route; partner briefs; limited activation; customer-response capture; and defined reporting.

Decision point

Scale, refine, redirect or stop based on purchasing evidence, operational learning and the economics of the next phase.

03

Integrated delivery

Strategy-to-handover implementation

Coordinated implementation for organizations that need the platform, partners, content, operations, performance review and ownership transition to work together.

May include

Roadmap and workstream leadership; specialist selection and briefing; stakeholder governance; commerce and customer journey; activation; measurement; troubleshooting; and handover.

Decision point

Transfer stable administration to the client and define any next phase only where evidence and commercial priority justify it.

Senior-led continuity and clear decision rights

Each format keeps one accountable lead across scoping, specialist coordination, decision framing and review, while preserving the client’s authority over product, risk, investment and long-term ownership.

Organizations with comparable needs can explore remarkable.’s approach to international business strategy and growth, including diagnostics, demand-validation pilots and implementation through operational handover.
